My Priorities
My name is James Harding, and I am running for a seat on the Kirkwood School District Board.
Throughout this campaign, there are two core values you will hear me return to again and again: community and ensuring every voice is heard. These principles guide why I’m running and how I believe our school district should serve students, families, and educators.
As I officially announce my campaign and begin meeting with members of the community in January, I look forward to discussing three key priorities.
First, student mental health and bullying prevention. Every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and heard. I believe students should have a meaningful voice in their school experience and that their humanity must always be honored. Our educators and leaders must be equipped to provide strong support systems—true lifelines—that foster belonging, dignity, and well-being.
Second, good stewardship and a sense of purpose. Academic success is essential, but it is not the whole picture. We must also prepare students to be engaged citizens and future leaders. By creating opportunities for service, volunteering, and community involvement, we help students develop responsibility, empathy, and real-world life skills that will serve them long after graduation.
Third, closing the opportunity gap through innovation. Every child deserves an equal chance at success. I am committed to exploring creative solutions—such as targeted academic clubs, tutoring programs, and early interventions—so students who begin to fall behind are supported rather than lost in the shuffle. We must also recognize that success looks different for every student by strengthening pathways for non-traditional learning, including trades and vocational options, so every student can see a future that feels attainable.

It was a wonderful turnout on Saturday on a rather brisk weather day. Much thanks to Allen McCoy for throwing this launch, and quickly pivoting to an alternate location. Great conversations were had.
